DCGOP Resolution: Supporting Ballot Measures Prop 50 and Initiative 108

A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING BALLOT MEASURES 50 AND 108 AIMED AT CUTTING AND CAPPING COLORADO PROPERTY TAXES

WHEREAS, the Executive Committee of the Douglas County Republican Party (DCR) is charged with upholding and advocating for core principles of Republicanism across the county, to include fiscal conservative positions that reflect the will and direction of the Republican Party based on the party’s national platform, specifically the GOP’s desire to “oppose tax policies that deliberately divide Americans or promote class warfare” and that “wherever current provisions of the (tax) code are disincentives for economic growth, they must be changed.”;

WHEREAS, the 2024 electoral season will see a number of ballot measures for voters to decide on, to include Measures 50 and 108 aimed at lowering and capping property taxes across Colorado, bringing those taxes in closer alignment with the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, or “TABOR”;

WHEREAS, the removal of the Gallagher Amendment through 2020’s Amendment B left elected officials and interest groups scrambling to stave off taxpayer anger who have seen, on average, a 40 percent increase statewide in property taxes, with some taxpayers in Douglas County seeing more than 50 percent, making Colorado even more unaffordable than ever before;

WHEREAS, citizens on fixed incomes, in lower income brackets, and middle class taxpayers in general are already faced with numerous economic pressures from persistent inflation from food to utilities a swell as mortgage payments to Democrat-enacted fees, making tax relief a top priority for the Republican Party;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the DCR Executive Committee endorses Ballot Measures 50 and 108, each aimed at capping increases to property taxes, statewide, at 4 percent annually, as well as cutting rates to 5.7 percent for residential property, as well as 25.5 percent for commercial, respectively, while protecting the state’s education fund. The DCR’s endorsement goes into effect with the successful signature verification and approval from the Colorado Secretary of State.
